| If
you would like to help us, you can support
our cause by donating just $10.
We hope that everyone who comes to this page,
and reads about the kids who live in Carpio,
will be inspired to help us reach our goals
to make a difference in the lives of the children.
We
want to give the children the chance to grow
up and have the same opportunities to pursue
their dreams, and get themselves out of poverty
and to live life to their greatest potential.
Our
first goal is to "Sponsor-A-Teacher"
who can come down a few times a week and help
the kids with their school work. We feel that
by giving the kids the support they need to
succeed in school, it will give them the tools
they need to have a chance at a better life.
Therefore, your donations today will go directly
to a fund that will be used to Sponsor-A-Teacher.
WHY
CARPIO?
"When
I went to volunteer abroad in Carpio, Costa
Rica, I really didn't know what to expect.
I also never expected to come back home and
want to do something for the kids I met while
there.
I
never in my life saw real poverty except for
what I saw on TV or in pictures. Poverty didn't
really mean anything to me and I had no concept
of what it really was. But after spending
a month in Carpio and volunteering with the
kids and seeing the way these kids lived all
the time, I couldn't believe that this was
their life. It was such a life-changing event
in my life. I thought about all the things
I have at home and how we take everything
for granted. I thought of how we spoil ourselves
with excess and never stop to think about
how there are other people out there that
have nothing. You really do gain a different
perspective on life and your surroundings.
I think about how I used to stress about the
most irrelevant things in my life such as
my cell phone dying in the middle of a conversation
or not having the right outfit for a night
out. It's amazing how these things become
so meaningless when you stay in a place like
Carpio. No one is rich. Everyone is poor.
The
children are so sweet and innocent and have
no idea of what life is like for the rest
of us. They are the innocent victims who without
our help will follow in their parents footsteps
because they lack the resources to get a proper
education and the means to pull themselves
out of poverty. They need so much and have
so little. It really teaches you about compassion,
and empathy when you see poverty up close.
The
children would come to the church where we
volunteered, and they would give us hugs and
play with us and try to learn English. It
was hard not to become attached to them when
you see how little they have in life and yet
they are happy. The church was like their
safe haven. The clothes the kids wear are
pretty much donated, the church if you look
at it, is not really like any church we have
ever seen in our life. If they didn't tell
us it was a church we would never have known.
I
am so glad I went to volunteer abroad this
summer and plan to keep going back to volunteer
as often as I can. Volunteering and working
with children in poverty has been one of the
most rewarding and fulfilling things I have
ever done and I am so glad I was able to experience
this."
